Why is this topic so important?
This unit was designed to educate our students on the perspectives of LGBTQ+ youth, vocabulary associated with LGBTQ+ individuals, and the challenges that this particular group has with bullying at school. Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth are significantly more likely to be bullied than other peer groups and often as a result suffer anxiety, depression, and school avoidance. Education about anti-bullying helps prevent bullying of this and other marginalized groups and reduces the negative effects of bullying.
This information will be presented by trained educators within the students' science classrooms. We have taken into consideration the developmental needs of each grade level and we feel that this presentation is a good introduction for all our 6th-8th grade students.
